It sounds like it's highly recommended for playing in VR but I only learned about it after I finished playing so I can't tell you much firsthand. I am told the Subnautica VR Enhancements mod fixes this and improves a bunch of other stuff. Items with the "video screens" interaction method have the hotspot issue. Items with this interface method work correctly. The Fabricator by contrast, does not have a graphical screen interface on the model (when you interact with it buttons appear in space instead). IIRC the camera screen has the same problem, but the "button" area is large and so your hotspot was still often over it despite the offset. This is why the scanner room is not responding to you - the "button" area is smaller and your interaction hotspot isn't on it. For me it was off to the mid lower-right of my view, invisible, unmarked, discovered by accident. In my case (Occulus Rift), whenever interacting with graphical screens on an in-game asset, such as the Cyclops HUD or the Scanner room, the interaction hotspot ("mouse cursor") is not at the center of the screen where the reticle is. The game production ceased development of the VR interface before it was quite finished, and so you've just hit one of the VR bugs (you might have even hit it before but didn't know you were supposed to be able to interact with the thing and so didn't notice).
